Doctoral / PhD Track
The Doctoral track consists of three stages.
- Stage 1: Portfolio competition.
- Stage 2: Open Doors competition tasks under online proctoring.
- Stage 3: Online interviews with prospective research supervisors and/or Doctoral Track managers. A Doctoral participant may attend up to six interviews: Up to three with prospective research supervisors and up to three with Doctoral Track managers.
The final winner status depends on the outcome of the Third Stage, including whether a prospective research supervisor agrees to supervise the applicant or a Doctoral Track manager recommends the applicant for admission.
Postdoctoral Track
The Postdoctoral track consists of three stages.
- Stage 1: Portfolio competition.
- Stage 2: Applicants prepare and submit a video presentation demonstrating their research achievements.
- Stage 3: Applicants participate in interviews with research project leaders.
Postdoctoral winners can be offered a research position at an organizing university.

Can I Choose Any Russian University?
Not necessarily. Open Doors winners and runners-up must follow the official quota and university-selection process. For Bachelor’s and Master’s applicants, the 2026 rules state that applicants select a language of instruction and a field of study/specialization corresponding to the relevant subject area, then list up to six eligible higher education institutions in order of preference. The available university and program choices depend on the relevant subject area, degree level, language of instruction and eligibility requirements.
Can I Study Medicine or Dentistry Through Open Doors?
